Abstract

The aim was to analyze the prevalence and factors associated with self-medication for COVID-19 in users of a Family Health Strategy (ESF). This is an observational and cross-sectional study which 124 users of both sexes and over 18 years old participated. A structured questionnaire was applied at the Family Health Unit. A total of 69 (55.64%) participants reported consuming medicines for COVID-19 without a prescription, most with the aim of preventing the disease. Family income up to 1 minimum wage was related to being 17.46 (OR CI 95% = 2.47-123.251) more likely to not self-medicate. Prevention was the main guide to inducing the consumption of medicines without a prescription and the practice is related to higher family income. It is necessary to develop actions to promote the rational use of medicines, as well as health education in the territories of the ESF.
